Happy birthday Dr. Seuss 🌈🎈 This week has b Happy birthday Dr. Seuss 🌈🎈

This week has been incredibly fun!! We painted “Thing 1’s” hair and met some #OT goals!!

Painting is fun way to engage all the senses and help kids learn!! We targeted:
🎨 grasp development
🎨 top-bottom strokes
🎨 motor coordination
🎨 visual attention
🎨 hand dominance
🎨 sensory exploration (some kids finger painted)

1) Model, model, model

2) Reduce demands

3) Give wait time - be patient - don’t rush the AAC user

4) Have fun!!
A SCOOTER! A scooter is one of your physical ther A SCOOTER!

A scooter is one of your physical therapist’s favorite pieces of equipment! Not only does it provide an opportunity for FUN movement, but it also helps promote higher levels of motor planning, motor control, and coordination!

Riding a scooter challenges:
🌈 Core stability
🌈 Balance, particularly standing on 1 foot on the scooter itself
🌈 Strength, especially of the leg that is pushing off the ground.
🌈 Coordination, for both sides of the body to perform 2 different actions (1 leg standing, 1 leg pushing)
🌈 Motor planning, as it challenges the regions of the brain that control motor planning and timing, to assure that the foot pushes off at just the right time to propel the child forward, while simultaneously maintaining their balance.

Who knew scooter riding could be so complex, yet still so fun! ☀️🌈☺️
Congrats to our very own @mrs.tara.hans 👏👏👏👏 She recently became an NLA Trained Clinician to further her knowledge and better serve children who communicate with delayed echolalia (scripting).

Delayed echolalia refers to utterances that are repeated after a significant delay. This type of language development is referred to as "gestalt language processing" where the child learns language in large chunks/phrases instead of word by word. This often looks like a child speaking in movie lines or songs, or better known as "scripting."

The Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) is a framework to better help those gestalt language processors better communicate. Since they are developing language differently than an analytic language processor (learns single words and builds to create longer utterances), a different treatment approach is needed.

Do you suspect your child is a GLP (gestalt language processor)? Ask your speech-language pathologist for more information or call us ☎️ at 904-372-4070

Regulation before expectations In our OT sessions Regulation before expectations

In our OT sessions we take time to enrich our kiddos in unique sensory experiences that will help calm and regulate the body.

A regulated nervous system 🌀can improve attention and participation for learning new skills.

❤️What is child-led play? It is following a ch ❤️What is child-led play? It is following a child’s interests and allowing them to lead.

❤️Instead of having YOUR own play agenda, you enter the child’s world of play.

❤️Why do it? When you follow a child’s lead during play, you establish yourself as a true play partner, rather than the director of play. The outcome? An authentic relationship built on CONNECTION, not compliance.

❤️We believe in child-led play here at Coastal on Valentine’s Day and everyday!!!

Jumping rope takes some serious whole body motor p Jumping rope takes some serious whole body motor planning, control, and coordination! Read below to learn WHY ⬇️⬇️⬇️

⭐️To successfully clear the rope, the legs have to work together to jump up off the floor, while simultaneously the arms are working to rotate the jump rope so that it moves underneath the feet at the precise time of take off, and then comes back around during the between landing from the jump, yet prior to the next take off.

⭐️It also requires core stabilization for all the limbs to work together at the same time, and challenges the regions of the brain that coordinate multiple parts of the body moving in different directions, yet in synchrony.

It is really an amazing skill 😼

Our friend here is learning just how to time, plan, and control these movements, as the skills required for jumping rope are also many of the motor skills that carry over to participation in sports and play with friends! 🏀⚽️🏈🎾

This is a gait training (or walking) activity that This is a gait training (or walking) activity that addresses multiple components of a child’s walking pattern.

In particular, walking while tapping the cones in a heel-first manner emphasizes a heel strike during walking, which is extra important for children that have limited ankle mobility, such as in toe-walking or following a period of being in a leg cast.

This activity also targets
⭐️single leg balance,
⭐️bilateral coordination for alternating movements,
⭐️motor planning, and
⭐️active muscle strengthening of the front of the shin muscles, called the anterior tibialis!
All are important for walking, running, navigating stairs, and jumping.

For added challenge, this exercise can also be done while walking backwards, laterally, or with an added cognitive challenge, such as counting by 2s!
