Did you know that one of the most challenging part Did you know that one of the most challenging parts for a baby progressing to walking is letting go of support with their hands?

Walking without handheld support can feel scary! However, providing support at another part of their body, such as underneath their arms or at their hips is a great way to fade reliance on handheld support and help the child gain confidence towards independent stepping. 🙂

The baby in this photo is working on taking steps towards his bubbles with assistance provided only at his hips, as this allows his body to do more of the walking work, without leaning excessively to rely on holding onto something with his hands.

How to try at home 🏠👇

Once your baby is standing and motivated to move towards a toy or a family member, guide them towards their desired toy with your hands providing support either at their hips or underneath their arms, without pulling on them. Let them lead the steps while your hands are there to support their balance and guide them as necessary.

Happy walking! 🚶🏼‍♂️

Play is fun, explorative, and what kids do best! During the exploration stage with foods, kids will often taste on their own. Offer spoons 🥄 and tools to play with the food! 🥑

Let's talk about core vocabulary! Did you know tha Let's talk about core vocabulary! Did you know that 85% of what we say is communicated with about 200 basic words?

We call these "core" words. Core words are consistent across place, topic, and cognitive ability.

Here are some characteristics of a core vocabulary:

⭐️A limited set of beneficial words
⭐️Words apply across settings
⭐️Made up primarily of pronouns, verbs, descriptors, and prepositions
⭐️Very few nouns are included in a core vocabulary

Looking for fun sensory bin ideas? 🌷Easter is r Looking for fun sensory bin ideas? 🌷Easter is right around the corner, and we are excited to share an activity we are introducing to our kiddos this week!

🥚This sensory bin will use Easter eggs to work on matching, letter recognition, visual scanning, and sensory processing. We happened to double the recipe to make enough for our kiddos to share, but here is the original recipe:

Materials:
- 18 cups of rice (appx. 9 lbs)
- Food dye (all rainbow colors or just primary colors)
- 6 teaspoons of water
- 6 baking sheets
- 26 plastic Easter eggs
- Sharpie permanent marker

Recipe:
- Place 3 cups of rice in a large metal or glass bowl.
- Add 15-20 drops of food coloring to a tablespoon of water to swirl and pour over rice.
- Stir the color well, adding more color and water as needed to achieve your desired look. (We also added a bit of vanilla extract at this step to add to the sensory experience, so feel free to get creative!)
- Pour the rice onto a baking tray and smooth it into a flat, even layer. Let dry for at least 2 hours, or overnight if possible.
- While rice is drying, take your permanent marker and write upper and lower case letters on each half of your Easter eggs and break them in two.
- Once the rice is dry, mix all colors into a large bin and add in your eggs.

Your kids can have fun finding the matching letters, scooping out the rice, and even making egg shakers! Let us know if you try this idea out at home!

Thank you to @thekindergartenconnection for this idea! 💫

This question is often asked by many parents! It c This question is often asked by many parents! It can be challenging to keep track of your child’s screen time with screens everywhere, especially when some screen time can be educational and support social development.

Research has shown too much screen time can lead to issues in the following areas: behavioral, social, sleep, vision, and weight problems due to engaging in sedentary activity that requires very little energy.

Excessive screen time can limit your child’s ability to observe, experience, and learn about the world around him/her.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends toddlers up to age 2 should avoid screen time other than video-chatting, while children ages 2-5 should be limited to no more than one hour per day of high-quality programming. For ages 6 and older, encourage healthy habits and limit activities that include screens.

Next time your child is watching T.V. or using the tablet, try engaging with them about what they are watching and learning! 😊

Push-pull exercises are a great total body activit Push-pull exercises are a great total body activity that targets multiple components at once! 💪

🏃‍♂️This heavy work exercise challenges the child’s muscles of their lower leg, hamstrings, hip extensors, and claves.

Not only the legs! The exercise will work their core, back muscles, and upper body muscles, including chest, shoulders, and triceps. 🏋️‍♀️

This helps promote strength and symmetry between their large muscle groups.

Pushing/pulling something heavy also provides deep sensory input to their joints (proprioception) which can help with calming and body awareness.

It also promotes sensory regulation in helping a child realize where their body is in space and what they are doing. 🙌

Since the pandemic began, virtual therapy sessions Since the pandemic began, virtual therapy sessions have become a new normal in our world. Virtual sessions can go by many names, such as teletherapy, telepractice, or telehealth.

It is a great way to provide your child with services through distance. Whether you are a veteran of virtual sessions or new to teletherapy, here are some tips to get the most out of your teletherapy sessions!

⭐️Set up a quiet, distraction-free spot within your home to participate in teletherapy.

⭐️Reduce background noise.

⭐️Use a device with a large screen. Our clinicians often share their screens, so it is important that your child can see the screen.

⭐️Make sure you have a strong internet connection. This will reduce troubleshooting and ensure that your child gets their full therapy time.

⭐️Check your email before the session. Sometimes our therapists will email materials that will need to be printed before the start of the session.

⭐️Stay nearby! You are our hands during a virtual session. Your child's therapist may need your assistance with behaviors, materials, or troubleshooting.

⭐️Avoid participating in virtual sessions in the car. This will ensure a strong internet connection throughout the session.

⭐️Glitches happen! Sometimes, we will need to reschedule. Add Coastal Therapy's office number to your contacts (904.372.4070), so you can call us if there's a need to reschedule.

Coastal Pediatric Therapy Center wants your child to succeed! Following the above tips can set your child up for success during virtual sessions. Save this post as a reference for your next virtual session!

What is a visual cue? 🤔 A visual cue is somethi What is a visual cue? 🤔 A visual cue is something that visually reminds or prompts a child to complete a certain task.

In physical therapy, this type of external feedback is extremely helpful in helping your child learn efficient movement patterns.

As they become stronger and more coordinated, they need less and less visual cues as their body learns to master those movements on their own. 👏🏻

A visual cue could be provided by having your child watch themselves in a mirror or video while they are moving, or can be used during an intervention (like in the video here) to promote the development of a skill or movement pattern, as it shows them where to place their limbs.

For example, visual cues are helpful for working on walking with feet in a neutral position, instead of turning outward or inward, as shown in the video above. 👣

How have you used visual cues with your child? Let us know in the comments!
