This is a gait training (or walking) activity that This is a gait training (or walking) activity that addresses multiple components of a child’s walking pattern.

In particular, walking while tapping the cones in a heel-first manner emphasizes a heel strike during walking, which is extra important for children that have limited ankle mobility, such as in toe-walking or following a period of being in a leg cast.

This activity also targets
⭐️single leg balance,
⭐️bilateral coordination for alternating movements,
⭐️motor planning, and
⭐️active muscle strengthening of the front of the shin muscles, called the anterior tibialis!
All are important for walking, running, navigating stairs, and jumping.

For added challenge, this exercise can also be done while walking backwards, laterally, or with an added cognitive challenge, such as counting by 2s!

⭐️When verbal communication isn't necessarily progressing or meeting the needs of the child, a therapist may recommend using AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) to help the individual communicate more effectively.

⭐️We have therapists that specialize in assessing, evaluating, and treating individuals with such needs.

⭐️They are also knowledgeable in obtaining speech generating devices through various companies for those individuals.

⭐️Because everyone deserves a voice!

Please reach out if you have any questions or if you think your child may benefit from an AAC device 📩☎️

Have you noticed that many toddlers love the feeli Have you noticed that many toddlers love the feeling of running? 🏃🏽‍♂️🏃🏽‍♂️🏃🏽‍♂️

They love it because it helps them move quickly and provides them a sensory experience. They experience a higher level of vestibular and proprioceptive input.

Running is a motor skill that typically begins to develop between 18-24 months in toddlers. It often starts as more of a “quick walk”, but as the toddler gains stability and confidence, they should be able to lift one foot quickly off the ground followed by the other in succession to break into a run.

Mature running with arm swing emerges closer to 38-45 months. Your child’s running form and their progression of running provides us with great insight into the child’s strength, balance, and coordination skills, and can help your child’s physical therapist develop a more specific treatment plan for them! If you have any concerns with your child’s running please contact us for an evaluation or a screening!

Happy running!
