Happy World Down Syndrome Day! We celebrate on 3/2 Happy World Down Syndrome Day! We celebrate on 3/21 every year to honor the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy - 3) of the 21st chromosome, which is the genetic cause of Down Syndrome. It is the most common chromosomal condition, occurring in 1 out of every 7000 births in the United States.

On this day, we want to recognize and celebrate the abilities of people with Down Syndrome, of all ages! We are sharing some pictures of a few young adults with Down Syndrome, who are siblings of some of our very own therapists!

People with Down Syndrome have unique personalities and emotions, just like everyone else. Many people with Down Syndrome attend school, hold jobs, and are active members of their communities. Some even compete in professional sports or star in movies!

You can participate in celebrating this day by wearing blue and yellow for Down Syndrome Awareness, and your favorite fun, crazy socks!

For more information on this Day, visit https://www.worlddownsyndromeday.org/ and check your your local Chapter of the Down Syndrome Association for community resources - https://dsaj.org/

Our OTs love messy kitchen activities, and so do o Our OTs love messy kitchen activities, and so do our Coastal kids!

Here we’re making SLIME!! It’s a fantastic way to gather around the table with friends, practice following directions, decrease tactile defensiveness, enhance problem solving and daily living skills.

Our kiddos truly look forward to hanging out in the kitchen each week just as much as they love our sensory gym 🙃

What’s your child’s favorite messy play activity?

🎨 top-bottom strokes
🎨 motor coordination
🎨 visual attention
🎨 hand dominance

A SCOOTER! A scooter is one of your physical ther A SCOOTER!

A scooter is one of your physical therapist’s favorite pieces of equipment! Not only does it provide an opportunity for FUN movement, but it also helps promote higher levels of motor planning, motor control, and coordination!

Riding a scooter challenges:
🌈 Core stability
🌈 Balance, particularly standing on 1 foot on the scooter itself
🌈 Strength, especially of the leg that is pushing off the ground.
🌈 Coordination, for both sides of the body to perform 2 different actions (1 leg standing, 1 leg pushing)
🌈 Motor planning, as it challenges the regions of the brain that control motor planning and timing, to assure that the foot pushes off at just the right time to propel the child forward, while simultaneously maintaining their balance.

Who knew scooter riding could be so complex, yet still so fun! ☀️🌈☺️
Congrats to our very own @mrs.tara.hans 👏👏👏👏 She recently became an NLA Trained Clinician to further her knowledge and better serve children who communicate with delayed echolalia (scripting).

Delayed echolalia refers to utterances that are repeated after a significant delay. This type of language development is referred to as "gestalt language processing" where the child learns language in large chunks/phrases instead of word by word. This often looks like a child speaking in movie lines or songs, or better known as "scripting."

The Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) is a framework to better help those gestalt language processors better communicate. Since they are developing language differently than an analytic language processor (learns single words and builds to create longer utterances), a different treatment approach is needed.

Do you suspect your child is a GLP (gestalt language processor)? Ask your speech-language pathologist for more information or call us ☎️ at 904-372-4070

❤️What is child-led play? It is following a ch ❤️What is child-led play? It is following a child’s interests and allowing them to lead.

❤️Instead of having YOUR own play agenda, you enter the child’s world of play.

❤️Why do it? When you follow a child’s lead during play, you establish yourself as a true play partner, rather than the director of play. The outcome? An authentic relationship built on CONNECTION, not compliance.

❤️We believe in child-led play here at Coastal on Valentine’s Day and everyday!!!
